New Valley Voices

Valley Voices features Wendy Wickwire (above) historian and author of At The Bridge: James Teit and an Anthropology of Belonging. Teit was an ethnographer and advocate for Indigenous rights who lived at Spences Bridge more than a century ago. He is an important figure to think about in this time of reconciliation. Also on the show, Michael Chang (below) on Canada's Forgotten War -- the Korean War. Douglas Day Dinner: November 15th

Join us for the Douglas Day Dinner on November 15th. Jim Foulkes and members of the Surrey Historical Society were instrumental in creating a park to honour a former slave family. Henry Houston Scott and his wife Amy came to Canada for a new life in 1912 with their three youngest children. They farmed and became full members of the Cloverdale community. Use the website's search box in the upper right corner to locate specific buildings and sites. New profiles recently added include: Alex Houston Residence, Annand/Rowlatt Farmstead, Coronation Block, Fidler/Worrell Residence, F.J. Hart Building/BC Telephone Co Exchange, Fort Langley Cemetery, Hassall Residence, Lochiel School, Moir Residence and Loucks Residence. Spirit Square Panels Renewed

  A fresh look. Spirit Square panels designed by Drew Atkins and Xwa-lack-tun have undergone some cleaning and restoration work. Located at the corner of Mavis & River Road in Fort Langley, the three panels depict salmon, beaver and wolf, and are dedicated to the Kwantlen People.

LHS Endorses Proposed Museum

   Langley Heritage Society recently added its support to a new museum and cultural centre for Langley in collaboration with the Kwantlen First Nation: Honourable Lisa Beare Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture Victoria, B.C. The Langley Heritage Society fully endorses efforts by the Township of Langley and Kwantlen First Nation to build a 36,000 square foot museum and cultural centre in Fort Langley. Replacement of the existing 60 year old facility is long overdue. The federal government recently committed $3 million toward this project through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, but it cannot proceed without provincial government support. The Township of Langley has submitted a request to the province for $10 million; it is currently under review.   Langley Heritage Society urges you to support this exciting project, and the timing couldn’t be better. Reporter George Garrett Speaks Tuesday Evening

Former CKNW reporter George Garrett is a legend in B.C. media circles. He'll share stories from his memoir, Intrepid Reporter this coming Tuesday October 22nd at 7:30 pm.  A farm boy from Saskatchewan who hitchhiked to his first job, George covered everything that moved in B.C. from the mid 1950s through the late 1990s.  Join us at Milner Chapel on Tuesday evening where you can also purchase tickets for the Douglas Day Dinner, and renew your LHS membership.

Last Show on Thanksgiving Saturday!

Creative Compass Society and the Langley Heritage Society present the final performances of the Wheels of Time on Saturday October 12th. These vignettes bring to life some of the stories connected to the heritage CN Station and the people who made Langley home from the 1920s to the 1960s, including station agent Richard Simpson, Dr Benjamin Marr and Billy Brown. See you at the CN Station for performances at noon, 1, 2 and 3 pm.
