The 1915 heritage CNR Station managed by the Langley Heritage Society is due for a new roof. Work is now underway to help preserve this building for many more years. Thanks to Station Manager Helen Williams for these images. Some of the new rubberized shingles are visible on the upper peak. Coming along! Above: The roof is mostly finished. The shingles are a rubberized and made from 95% recycled materials, including recycled tires. We have also added new colour-matched eavestroughs to the renewed roof.
Thanks to Doug Keller for sending us this 1958 booklet that celebrated the role of Fort Langley in the creation of the Colony of British Columbia 100 years earlier. The National Historic Site was partially restored for the B.C. Centennial; new palisades were built, one bastion, and the Big House. (The old storehouse was the only original building still standing.) The language in the pamphlet is typical of its time, and the role of Indigenous people is minimized. Today the Kwantlen are important partners, running the gift shop, a restaurant and helping interpret the Fort Langley and Kwantlen stories.
This wooden flag attached to the pumphouse in Murrayville was made by Alexander Pepin, our president Fred Pepin's father. He crafted wooden flags in the 1960s that can be seen on many barns throughout the Fraser Valley. As he travelled the province, he would often put them up on school bus shelters. The family had a history of service in WW II and Alexander wanted to see the new Canadian flag used and celebrated.
