The Township of Langley has launched a new web-based app that lets people explore the story of Langley’s historic places. It highlights early homes, places with heritage value and sites that tell Langley’s story — which reaches back to the earliest days of European settlement on the south coast of British Columbia. It also highlights some of our local indigenous peoples’ history. As you scroll through the narrative, click on various historic sites to see them located (with images) on an interactive map. “Launching this storyboard on the Township’s website is the perfect way to celebrate Heritage Week and our local history,” said Heritage Planner Elaine Horricks. She notes that 64 properties currently included on the Township’s Community Heritage Register are featured in the new web app. The app is based on the OUR SHARED HISTORY initiative led by the Township of Langley and heritage consultant, Donald Luxton. Langley Heritage Society members were also involved in the project.
History buffs will find lots to keep them occupied on the new app; realtors and developers can also locate information about the heritage value of individual properties. Langley Heritage Society spurred the creation of a Heritage Register when it undertook an inventory of buildings in the 1980s. It later published a book with the TOL — Langley’s Heritage: A Listing of Heritage Resources (1995). The book can be located at the Langley Centennial Museum.
