We Love Our Members. Time to Renew!

The Langley Heritage Society is proud to be supported by people from throughout Langley -- some have been with us since the beginning. Although our public activities are limited due to the Covid pandemic, we value your continued support. The Society and its volunteers are eager to reopen the heritage CNR Station in Fort Langley, and to resume the highly popular Speaker Series at Milner Chapel. This will happen when the time is right. Meanwhile, it's time to renew your membership! Your support gives us a vote of confidence to continue to fund school programs at the Langley Centennial Museum, heritage fairs,  an annual $1,000 scholarship in memory of Bays Blackhall, and to manage and maintain nine heritage buildings restored by the Society. Your membership allows volunteers to continue working behind the scenes at the CNR Station, under the guidance of manager Helen Williams, to improve interpretation, preserve the station [...]

We can't let Christmas go by without our quarterly newsletter, which you can read HERE.  It includes a message from our president, Fred Pepin, Christmas traditions, an update from the CNR Station, and a Wheels of Time Christmas story. Merry Christmas to all of our members  -- and stay safe! We hope to see you in the year ahead.

Bays Blackhall Memorial Scholarship Winner

Langley Heritage Society has awarded RE Mountain Secondary student Julia Kim with a $1,000 scholarship to further her studies. Julia was chosen, "for her community involvement, excellent academic standing, and for being a well-rounded individual." The scholarship is given in honour of the late Bays Blackhall, a dedicated heritage and conservation advocate. We asked Julia about her goals for the future: "I will be studying Law and Society at UBC through the Coordinated Arts Program. I am hoping to graduate from UBC and study even further at a law school to become a lawyer. I hope to be able to protect the minorities in society and give them a voice in situations when they are not able to. However, my ultimate goal is to become a judge in court after practicing law as a lawyer. I would like to thank the Langley Heritage Society in Honour of Bays Blackhall Memorial [...]

On the Horizon

Artist Lyle Longstaff continues his work on murals for the Glen Valley model railway. Mount Baker is looking spectacular! The 1920s caboose that houses the railway is getting some TLC in the off season. More about the Fort Langley heritage CNR Station HERE.

New Scenics Coming to Model Railway!

Lyle Longstaff and Gerry Landsman mapping out new backdrop (Helen Williams photo) It may be the off season at the Fort Langley CNR Station, but lots is happening behind the scenes. We're excited to report that artist Lyle Longstaff is creating a new scenic backdrop for the Glen Valley Railway that is inside our 1920s caboose. CNR Station Manager Helen Williams and long time model railway volunteer Gerry Landsman have been working with Lyle to develop a new scenic backdrop that will be to the same scale as the model railway. We're so lucky that Lyle has volunteered to do this for Langley Heritage Society -- some of his paintings have been featured on our web page and Facebook previously (see last two photos below). Lyle grew up in the steam era and says as a painter this is his real love. It's hard to believe he started painting about [...]
